Laura Swettenham MSc MBPsS
Performance Psychologist
Laura is a Performance Psychologist who has experience delivering one-to-one services and workshops to Club-level athletes through to Olympic Development Athletes. Laura currently consults in Tennis, Rowing, Rugby League, and Football. She has recently been appointed by Blackburn Rovers Football Club to work as part of the Sport Psychology Support Team within their Academy.
Laura’s approach is inspired by mindfulness and acceptance approaches, believing that, “what we resist persists”. She works with athletes to examine thoughts and emotions through a different lens. Laura is an accredited Spotlight practitioner. Spotlight is a profiling tool used within a range of environments, including high-performance settings. The tool can help individuals to understand the basic processes of motivation, learning, and emotion and how these influence behaviour. Spotlight can help individuals and teams to be more flexible and adaptable, enabling them to work more effectively.
Trained as an active listener, and with experience using and researching autonomy-supportive communication, Laura applies these specific techniques in her work to empower and motivate clients. She also explores this form of communication with coaches, encouraging its use when interacting with athletes and parents. Alongside her consultancy work Laura is currently studying for a Professional Doctorate at Liverpool John Moores University.
